Ingrowing Toenail Surgery: A Guide to Partial Nail Avulsion

Expert Care and Treatment for Permanent Relief from Ingrown Toenails

About the condition

Ingrowing toenails occur when the edge of a toenail, typically on the big toe, grows into the skin adjacent to it, leading to pain, redness, and sometimes infection. This condition can cause significant discomfort and impact daily activities. A Partial Nail Avulsion (PNA) is a surgical intervention designed to address this issue by removing the portion of the nail that is growing into the skin, effectively reshaping the nail's edge to prevent future occurrences.

Treatment

The Partial Nail Avulsion is a straightforward surgical procedure carried out under local anesthesia to ensure a pain-free experience. This treatment is a particular area of expertise for our senior Podiatrist, offering a high success rate in permanently resolving the issue of ingrown toenails. The procedure typically lasts about one hour, and involves the precise removal of the ingrown section of the nail and reshaping of the nail bed to prevent recurrence.

Post-operation care is crucial for a smooth recovery. Patients are advised to keep the toe dressed and dry for at least one week following the surgery. Due to the local anesthetic used during the procedure, arranging transportation is necessary as driving may not be safe immediately afterward. Additionally, at least one follow-up appointment is required to ensure proper healing and to address any concerns that may arise during the recovery process.
